What is SSW (Specified Skilled Worker)?

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) is a residential status introduced by the Government of Japan in April 2019, allowing aspiring international workers to work and reside in Japan in specific sectors facing labor shortages.

The Memorandum of Cooperation between India and Japan for the implementation of 'Specified Skilled Worker' was signed in January 2021, opening opportunities for Indian youth to work in Japan.

Who Can Apply for SSW?

Must be over 18 years old and in good health

Have completed 12 years of education or equivalent

Pass both Japanese language test and sector-specific skills test

No criminal record and meet immigration requirements

Demonstrate financial capability for initial expenses

Committed to working in the designated sector for up to 5 years

SSW Exam Structure

Japanese Language Test

All SSW candidates must demonstrate Japanese language proficiency through standardized tests.

JLPT N4 level or above
JFT-Basic A2 level or above

Skills Proficiency Test

Sector-specific tests to evaluate practical knowledge and skills for the designated work field.

Tailored to each industry sector

Multiple times per year
Computer-based testing

Skills Proficiency Tests

Conducted through NSDC India partnerships
Available sectors: Nursing Care, Building Cleaning, Industrial Machinery, Construction, Shipbuilding, Accommodation, Agriculture
Written and practical components

Important Information

Test schedules and availability are updated regularly. Those who completed Technical Intern Training in the same sector are exempt from skills tests.
